What is an Expired Domain Auction?

When a domain is not renewed by the registrant and has passed its grace renewal period, it will go to expired auction. The highest bidder for the domain may then receive the domain in their Dynadot account.

Auction Details:

  • Requirement:To bid on expired auction, first create a Dynadot account if you haven't already. We require at least $5 account spending before you can participate in our expired domain auctions. You can prepay $5 into your account and use the account credit to pay for your first won auction or other purchase with us.
  • Duration: 7-11 days. If a bid is received in the last 5 minutes of an auction, the end time will be extended by 5 minutes. There is no limit to the number of times an auction may be extended before the auction's final "end time" is set.
  • Bidding: You can place bids at any time during the auction. Please note that you're unable to withdraw or modify a bid once it's placed.
  • Final Cost: Your winning bid plus renewal fee.

Placing a Bid:

  • You can also place a proxy bid for higher than the current minimum bid. If someone else places a bid, the system will automatically bid for you until your max proxy bid amount is reached. Learn how does proxy bidding work?

Winning the Auction:

  • If you are the highest bidder when the auction ends, you have 48 hours to pay. (Please kindly note that as the highest bidder, if you don't pay, you will be banned from both our expired auctions and our backorders.)
  • If payment is not received from the highest bidder and there are additional bidders, our system will create an order for the second highest bidder by then and notify them via email. They will have 24 hours to pay.
  • Once you pay, the domain will be transferred to your Dynadot account in about 4 days.
  • When the domain is added to the winning bidder's account, the domain will be placed in an "Auction Lock" status for about 15 days.

Note:

If a domain did not receive bids during the expired auction, it may be offered at a reduced price in our Expired Closeout. Learn What is a closeout?
