When a domain expires, it typically enters a renewal grace period (usually around 40 days), during which the current owner can still renew it at the standard renewal price. If the domain is not renewed during this time, it moves into the redemption period, where renewal may still be possible but at a significantly higher cost, depending on the TLD.

Once the redemption period ends, the domain may become unrecoverable, making renewal impossible. To avoid losing a domain, it is strongly recommended to renew it before the expiration date or during the renewal grace period.

If a domain registered with Dynadot is not renewed, it will eventually enter an auction phase. During this stage, other Dynadot users can place bids on the expired domain in an attempt to become the new owner once the auction concludes.

After a domain expires, it typically goes through several stages before becoming publicly available again: renewal grace period, redemption period, pending delete, and then release.

During that process, the domain may also appear in Dynadot's expired auction system before full deletion. If it is not renewed or restored, it is eventually deleted and can then be registered again by the public.

If a domain is already registered, you cannot register it immediately. If the current owner lets it expire, it may later become available through Expired Auctions, Closeouts, or backorder once it reaches deletion and is dropped.

A taken domain may also be available through the aftermarket if the owner has listed it for sale, but if you are specifically waiting for expiration, you need to follow the domain's lifecycle rather than treat it like a new registration. If the previous domain owner does not renew the domain, after the grace renewal period ends, the domain will be moved to Expired Auctions - featured on this page.

Here, you will be able to bid on the domain. If no one bids on the domain, it will be moved to Closeouts, where it will stay for three days, and the price will be lowered each day - you may also purchase the domain there as well.

"Pending delete" means the previous owner has not renewed the domain, and it has been deleted from their account. The former owner still has the opportunity to restore the domain by paying the higher restoration price.

If they don't, roughly 75+ days after expiration (the exact timing depends on the Registry), the domain will be released for registration again. You can monitor our Backorders page, as the domain may appear there before it is released.

When you backorder a domain, our system will attempt to "catch" it for you as soon as it becomes available. Essentially, backordering gives you first right on a deleted domain name that is about to be released. If multiple people backorder the same domain, it will go to a Backorder Auction, where the highest bidder wins.

To participate in Dynadot's expired domain auctions, you must meet some simple requirements.

You need a Dynadot account (free to create) and either maintain at least a $5 account balance or have made a $5 purchase within the past year. Accounts must also be in good standing and not banned from Dynadot's aftermarket platform. You can meet the $5 requirement by adding prepay funds to your account.

For bids over $2,000, a 5% deposit of the bid amount is required. If you win the auction but fail to complete payment, this deposit is forfeited as a non-payment fee.
